has been a photojournalist for over twenty years.
She divides her time between working on national and international news and sports coverage as a staff photographer at the San Francisco Chronicle. Prior to working at the Chronicle she worked for the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press. In 1992 Atkins was part of the team from the Los Angeles Times that won a Pulitzer prize in sport news for the Los Angeles riots. She was also a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer prize for her photo of U.S. Women’s Soccer player Brandy Chastain exulting after her wining goal in the 1999 Women’s World Cup. Atkins grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and studied photography at Oklahoma State University. She left to pursue positions as a staff photographer at various newspapers on the West coast.
